LED wall content: a deep dive and a preview.

Preview

Drop your file in and see how it fits.

Drop in a video or a still image (an MP4 or WebM, a PNG or JPG), then pick your LED wall's pixel pitch and size, or start with an example. You see it on that wall with bars, cropped to fill and stretched, with the numbers for each and the best fix. Copy the result as text or save it as an image to share with your team. We confirm your wall's exact pixel size: ask us.

Good to know

A preview, not a proof.

The preview shows how the shape of your file meets the shape of the wall, so use it to settle the layout. Brightness and color are best judged on the real wall, and we check your content on the wall during setup and rehearsals.

Deep dive

How LED wall content fits.

Aspect ratio

Aspect ratio is the shape of the picture. An LED wall can be any shape.

Your file fills the wall edge to edge when the two have the same shape. An LED wall is built from panels, so it can be wide, tall or square.

Aspect ratio is the width of a picture divided by its height. A TV and most video is 16:9: 16 units wide for every 9 tall, like 1920 x 1080 pixels. A file only fills a screen edge to edge when the two have the same shape.

A TV is always 16:9. An LED wall is not. It is built from panels, so it takes the shape of the booth or the stage: a long wall behind a counter, a tall tower, a square header, a wall in several parts. Many LED walls are not 16:9, and that is where the preview helps.

Every wall also has a pixel size: the number of LEDs across and down. That is the size to build your file at. It depends on the pixel pitch, which is the distance between LEDs, and on how many tiles the wall has. Pick the pitch and count the tiles across and up in the preview, and it works out the pixel size for you. We confirm the exact figure.

Reading the result

Four ways a file can meet a wall.

When your file and the wall have different shapes, the picture gets bars, gets cropped to fill, or gets stretched. A file made for the wall fills it with nothing lost.

The preview shows your own file all four ways.

Made for the wallRecommended The file has the same shape and pixel size as the wall, so it fills every LED with nothing lost.
BarsLetterbox or pillarbox The whole picture shows, and the part of the wall it does not reach stays dark.
Crop to fillScale to fill The picture fills the wall, and the parts that fall outside the wall are cut off.
StretchStretch to fit The picture fills the wall and nothing is cut, but every shape is pulled out of proportion.

Making bars work

Bars do not have to be black.

When the whole picture has to show, the bars can carry a blurred copy of the video, a logo, a ticker or a second piece of content.

The full detail opens with your TLL password.

Planning for a crop

Keep text and logos away from the edges that get cut.

If a file will be cropped to fill the wall, keep anything that has to be read toward the middle, away from the two edges that get cut.

The file

Export at the wall's exact pixel size.

Build and export the file at the wall's exact pixel width and height, and every pixel of your file lands on one LED, with nothing scaled, cut or stretched.

  1. 01

Start the design at the wall’s pixel size.

  2. 02

    Export one MP4.

  3. 03

    Check it in the preview.

Working with us

Ask us for the wall's pixel size.

Every wall we build has its own pixel size. The preview gives you an estimate from the pitch and the size. Ask us for the exact figure before the design starts, and the file fits the first time.

  1. 01

The wall you are designing for: the size, or the booth or stage plan. We send back the exact pixel size.

  2. 02

If the wall is in several parts, say so. We send a pixel map: one picture of the whole canvas with each part marked.

  3. 03

What you are showing: videos, slides, a live camera or a mix.

  4. 04

Your show date, so the file, the wall and the crew line up.

LED wall content FAQ

Questions designers ask us.

What aspect ratio should LED wall content be?

The same shape as the wall. An LED wall is built from panels, so it can be wide, tall or square, and a 16:9 file only fills a 16:9 wall.

What resolution should LED wall content be?

The exact pixel width and height of the wall. Each pixel of your file then lands on one LED, with nothing scaled, cut or stretched.

Can I play 16:9 content on an LED wall that is not 16:9?

Yes, in one of three ways. Show the whole picture with dark bars where it does not reach.

What is letterboxing or pillarboxing on an LED wall?

Bars on the wall where the picture does not reach. When a file and a wall have different shapes and the whole picture is shown, the leftover part of the wall becomes bars: at the top and bottom on a taller wall (a letterbox), at the sides on a wider wall (a pillarbox).

Will my content be cropped on an LED wall?

Only if it is scaled up to fill a wall of a different shape. Then the parts of the picture that fall outside the wall are cut off, on two sides.

Can I stretch my video to fit an LED wall?

A little, yes. The preview gives you the stretch percentage for your file and your wall, and the full guide explains how far is too far.

How do I find the pixel size of my LED wall?

For a quick estimate, pick the pixel pitch on your quote in the preview on this page and count the tiles across and up: it gives the pixel size. For the exact figure, ask us.

What file format should I send for an LED wall?

One high-quality MP4 at the wall’s exact pixel width and height. The full export settings open with your TLL password.

What is pixel pitch, and does it change my file?

Pixel pitch is the distance from the center of one LED to the next, in millimeters. It sets how many pixels fit in a wall of a given size, so two walls the same size can have very different pixel sizes.

How do I check my content before the show?

Drop it into the preview at the top of this page with the wall’s pixel size, and you see right away whether it fits, gets bars, gets cropped or gets stretched. Copy the result as text or save it as an image and send it to your team.

What files work in the LED wall preview?

A video or a still image your browser can play: an MP4 or WebM video, or a PNG or JPG. A still is handy when you have a key frame before the edit is finished.

Designing now?

Send us the wall. We'll send back the exact pixel size.

Tell us the wall, the show and when your file is due. You get the pixel size, and a pixel map for a wall in several parts.
